When searching and buying used auto parts, as with most other purchases that we make, it always helps the process if we understand a little about what we are buying and how to communicate that to the used auto parts salesperson. In essence, to speak the same "Used Auto Parts Language" if you will. Below are a few words and phrases that are used in the auto salvage and used parts industry that may help you find and buy the correct used auto parts for your vehicle.
Top quality or "like new" condition used auto parts.
Complete rear section of vehicle (from the rearmost doors) with the suspension. Including: rear bumper assembly, tail lamps, quarter panels, deck lid, suspension, all body panels and inner structure
The Lower front portion of the rear Quarter Panel located behind the rear doors for 4 door vehicles and each door for 2 door vehicles
Used engines, transmissions or mechanical parts that have been tested and determined to function at or above normal.
Also known as the “power train” is the engine, transmission, rear end and/or drive axles responsible for powering the vehicle
The complete rear part of the vehicle (from the rearmost doors) including the roof of the vehicle
A wrecked or salvage vehicle with less than 3 good or “straight” outer body panels
The complete front part of a vehicle (from the forward most doors) including: fenders, hood, grille, front bumper assembly, headlamps, signal lamps, inner structure and may or may not include the radiator, condenser and cooling fan assemblies
The front end portion of a vehicle. (See Front Clip)
The front portion of a vehicle less the left and right fenders. (See front clip)
The front portion of a vehicle less the left OR right fenders. (See front clip)
Used in conjunction with Front Clip, Front End, Nose, Center Front and Three Quarter Front End and signifies whether the purchase will include the cooling system of the vehicle namely the radiator, condenser and cooling fan assemblies
A Straight Rear axle that has no role in powering the vehicle
The complete suspension assembly on either front side of the vehicle
The part of the steering assembly/column that connects to the steering gear box
The engine and/or front suspension support
The inner uni-body part of the vehicle which supports the assembly of the outer portion/parts, mechanical elements and interior parts of the vehicle
The central removable part of the rear end assembly of a vehicle used to turn the rear axles
Total cost of used parts purchase including deliver or shipping charges
A vehicle diagram marked and used as a guide to indicate to salvage yard vehicle dismantlers where they should cut the inner structure for body panels such as front clips, rear clips, rear quarter panels etc
